Competitors
I had a browse at some well known e-commerce websites that sell similar items such as baby shoes and baby clothes. Through my observations it became clear that my competitors with successful websites had many similar desirable features. When designing my website, I will incorporate these features in an attempt to match the success of those currently on the web.
From a consumers point of view, internet shopping carries risk. Without the option of inspecting the items physically, a lot of trust is put into online purchases. To maximise customer confidence, I believe it is vital that the images of the products are of the highest quality. All images must be taken in perfect lighting conditions to give accurate colour visuals of the entire product range.
From a personal point of view, when I am using the websites for shopping I am more concerned with the functionality of the site then the design. I will ensure that the functionality does not become compromised by the design.
Clarks
Sales and promotions are usually advertised on the front page and they tend to be displayed as a slider to catch the customer's attention.
Mothercare
Mothercare has a largely plain background, again this is to allow the customer to get the most accurate picture of the products from their images. The mothercare website has a filter along the side, which allows the customer to narrow their product search to suit their requirements. I think the filter is a good feature to a e-commerce website, it can save the customer time viewing unsuitable products.
Internet shopping is becoming more and more popular, from everyday items to holidays, fast food to clothing. Below is a ranking list of the top 20 retailers by internet traffic in the quarter to June 2016 which was published by the IMRG (Interactive Media in Retail Group) in August 2016.
The top three sites listed have a few similarities, all three are simple in design, they have white backgrounds with dark menu bars. The images of the products are simple but offer multiple angled shots. These websites are not too flashy, they are easy to navigate and are all accessible across desktops, tablets and smartphones.
The usage of smartphones has seen great popularity and continues to do so as illustrated below. It is vital that my website is fully responsive for various devices, including smartphones and tablets.

Clarks is recognised worldwide as a successful brand of footwear, I am a personal fan of the brand as their shoes last and are of good quality. Clarks' website is always classic, it usually has attractive images in it's front page but it is largely plain and doesn't compete with the images of the products. The images of the products are shown against a white background which allows the customer to have a good view of the product's shape and colour. The products are displayed in a logical way which makes the site user- friendly.
